Introduction: Modestly Me

Hello to whoever is reading this! I am a student at the University of Oklahoma. I am a senior majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Spanish and Chemistry. I made this blog for my Mythology and Folklore online course. I was in the Pride of Oklahoma for 3 years. You can occasionally catch my few seconds of glory on television if you tune in to the Sooner's Football Games!

This is my final semester in undergrad, and I am so excited! I have been doing biomedical research over dental caries for over a year now. I will continue doing research this semester and hope to continue in graduate school.

I LOVE animals! I have a fat cat named Izzy. She occasionally will play but usually lays around looking like a worm on whoever will let her rest upon them.

I love reading. Over the all my breaks from school I make sure to read as many books (for fun) as I can! I don't really have a favorite book. I just like anything that can stir my emotions and make me feel what the characters feel! On the other hand I don't really watch television. To be quite honest, I don't really like technology.
I know! I'm a disgrace! And to add to it: I even deleted my Netflix account...by choice! I haven't really missed it either! I am convinced I was born in the wrong generation. I believe I would have been better suited for a generation that doesn't rely on technology as much.

I dance and play the piano and flute. I studied abroad in Spain (more details about my trip can be found in my post: Mi Lugar Favorito), and I now have the travel bug and can't wait to go explore other places! My goals in life are to learn the guitar, cello, saxophone, become fluent in Spanish and German, travel the world, teach English/work in different countries, work for Disney, and show love of my one and only God through my work!

  1. Sabrina, I loved reading about your fat cat, Izzy! The description was so great - she lies around like a worm. I envy your enjoyment and discipline with reading. That is one hobby/ skill I wish I possessed, but I'm glad you have that drive. Unfortunately, this is my last semester at OU, so I won’t be at many of the future football games to look for you out on the field, but maybe I can catch the glimpse of you on TV. I love Jesus too!

  2. Oh, you are in the Pride: how exciting, Sabrina! And you have probably already guess that I am a fan of cats also. I am glad that Izzy and Spice get along. We have two cats, and they don't get along: the girl cat just wants the boy cat to leave her alone, but he is mean for no reason at all (jealous, I guess). Luckily, she prefers outdoors and he prefers indoors... so, most of the time she is able to live her life free of the annoying boy cat. Meanwhile, I hope I can persuade you about some of the joys of technology: if you cannot be in Spain right now, at least you can enjoy Spanish art and photos and music all there on the Internet. Maybe you will even want to do a Spanish project for this class! There are some wonderful resources online for both Spanish and also Moorish storytelling traditions. If you like to read, there is an endless (ENDLESS) supply of free books online that are waiting for you... :-)

  3. Sabrina,

That is really awesome that you were a part of the Oklahoma Pride! After reading your introduction I am impressed at how you are involved in so many different things. I too love reading but I always find myself never reading any books during the semester. I guess I need to delete my Netflix account and maybe I will find more time to read! Your cat Izzy is very cute. I do not have a cat currently but when I move into a larger place I am definitely going to get one. Well it was very nice to meet you and I hope you have a great final semester in your undergrad!

  4. Hey Sabrina, it was great to see other engineering students take this course! It’s interesting that you were in the Pride of Oklahoma, what instrument did you play? Izzy looks adorable and fluffy, I’m sure she is keeping you warm in winter! I visited Barcelona this summer and I loved it, I’m sure Sevilla was as beautiful. Good job on deleting Netflix, unfortunately today many people (Including myself) get too caught up with technology to where they no longer appreciate life and what’s really around them. Anyways, it was great getting to know you and good luck on your final semester as undergrad!

  5. Congratulations Sabrina, you're almost done (with undergrad at least)! That is so exciting. You should be really proud, chemical engineering is seriously no joke.

I enjoy reading and dancing as well! Do you have any book suggestions? I'll read anything, I'm not too picky about genres. I haven't read a novel in a long a time, the last one I read was last summer, I read Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. Lately, I've been into short stories and poetry.

I also think it's really cool you've been in the Pride. I have a few COMM friends that are also in the Pride and they LOVE it.

  6. Hi Sabrina! Really cool that you're in the Pride, I heard it was hard work! Izzy sounds exactly like a cat one of my friends has, she's got a habit of laying down on people too. I've got to say I share your dislike for TV, in fact I never had a Netflix account in the first place. I see that one of your goals in life is to learn to play guitar and I can tell you: it's way easier than piano! Anyways big congratulations on making it through undergrad and I hope you find success in graduate school too!

  7. Wow! Totally shocked you dislike technology, I couldn't live without it. I swear I have nomophobia. But mad props to you for deleting your Netflix account. Honestly, it'd be in my best interest to do the same (you know, for productivity reasons), but I just find it hard to justify when I'm not the one paying for it. I'd like to thank you for the hundreds of times I got to hear "Boomer Sooner" played; I enjoyed it every single time. Also, I really do hope you do learn to play the cello. It's my favorite instrument (though I am not musically inclined whatsoever). Congrats on almost being done with undergrad, and good luck in grad school!

  8. As Todd said, I am shocked that you are able to give up technology so easily. Even though I hate that it has such a large role in my life, I definitely couldn't live without it. Especially not Netflix! My lazy days require Netflix and my bed or couch. I am jealous of your traveling ventures. I really hope one day to be able to travel around the world. I also would love to work for Disney, but also being a senior, I feel like my chances are now slim to none. I wish I could've done the college internship with them at some point during my undergrad. Congrats on finishing up though! I am also on my final semester and it is so bittersweet. Good luck this semester!

  9. Hi Sabrina, it's a pleasure to meet you!!
That's pretty awesome that you're a Chemical Engineering major with a minor in Spanish and Chemistry. My boyfriend is actually a Chemical Engineering major as well and is currently working close to the field. He's also German so I would love to learn and be fluent in German as well!! I had Spanish as my minor as well at one point, though I realized and waited too long that I lost a bit of my knowledge in the language. I don't have anyone to really practice with and I'm not exactly allowed to travel abroad due to $$ and parental issues. I hope that one day I can travel around as well!
I too love animals and happen to have my own pup that wasn't exactly supposed to happen, but we sure do love him lots!
I applaud you for quitting technology. I'm actually on the verge of quitting it myself, though I only keep some to keep in contact with family all around the world and friends that I've met from other countries as well. It's definitely hard on my part, though I think I could get there some day haha!
Congratulations on your last semester here at OU as well!! Wish you luck after graduation!

  10. ¡Hola Sabrina!

  11. Hello, Sabrina! Despite being an avid electronic user, I do have my fair share of distrust when it comes to them. I prefer having physical copies of class readings to review rather than digital ones, for instance. Taking a class on Ethics and Issues in Electronic Media also helps highlight problems in our information society!

I don't read many books, but the occasional graphic novel can really grip me, like Maus, as it I feel it takes an uncommon and refreshing direction in terms of holocaust stories. There's also visual novels, which often blend into video games but have distinguishing characteristics. The Ace Attorney series of games is one of the most popular examples, and I highly recommend them for great courtroom antics and brain-tanglers!

  12. I squealed when I saw you cat. He is so adorable. I am so jealous, I miss having a cat around, but current living conditions do not allow it. On technology- It is perfectly acceptable to not really on it. I wish I could say the same but I enjoy using YouTube and Pandora for music to much to abandon it. That and fan-fiction, but avoiding TV and movies is perfectly acceptable. I totally agree with you on the books- at home my entire wall is covered in shelves and even that is not enough to hold all my books! You have such big dreams, I hope you a able to achieve them all!

  13. Hi Sabrina! It's nice to get to hear even more about you! I had no clue that you didn't like technology... I can believe you deleted your Netflix account and don't miss it! That's awesome. Congratulations on graduating this semester! You have some pretty great goals to meet, also, and I hope you achieve everything you set your mind to and more.

  14. Hey Sabrina, I want to start by saying that I really enjoy your customization on your blog. It really shows that you are taking the extra effort to make the blog yours. I share your interest in reading when I get the chance outside of school, but I will admit that I rely on technology too much... I definitely admire your independence from technology. That seems to be a rarity these days!

  15. Hi! I think a few people have said this, but your blog design is so pretty. The color scheme is very relaxing and appealing.

Your cat is so cute! Does she lay like that all the time? My cat always splays out on his back with his limbs in all directions, like a weirdo.

I wish you the best for post-grad research! I'm graduating after this semester too, but I won't be in school after that. I'm sure you'll do great.

  16. Nice to meet another Engineer in this class! I am doing aerospace but not as far along as you are. I think it;s awesome that you are studying Spanish as well. (It's actually my first language *Surprise*) I too am not the biggest on technology unless it's a plane or a rocket. Good luck with your research and congrats on being done with part of you college career!

  17. Nice to meet you! I like the colors on your blog.

Last semester in undergrad! That sounds so exciting. Good job on the research, as well as being in the Pride of Oklahoma; that sounds really cool. Your cat is cute!! Love the picture. My dog is kind of the same; she doesn't play often but she just lies around most of the time.

  18. Hi Sabrina,
Your blog is very cute. I like how personal you made it. On another note, how can you not like television!? Technology is my everything haha. You could definitely get just as emotional for a TV show, but to be honest it is probably better to not be so invested in technology because it takes up so much time and attention. Good luck with your future endeavors!

  19. Hi again!! Sorry to leave a random comment-- I didn't know where to put it while making sure you would see it. But thanks so much for your comment on my storybook!! It was super sweet. And yes! Please add music to yours, too! It'd be really cool! You didn't have to ask, but thank you for being so considerate :^).

  20. It's great to get to know you Sabrina! That's so impressive that you're focusing on Chemistry Engineering, Chemistry, and Spanish. I find I can barely focus on English. I love reading as well, which is one of the reasons I became an English major. I find that I have no time to read for fun, though, which is really sad. I love how grand your goals are and I hope you get to achieve all of them. That would be an incredible life, especially when you can also do it for the glory of God. I cannot wait to read what you've written!

  21. Hello! Wow you have so many talents! That would be so cool to use the languages you learn in their origin countries when you travel. Ha your major sounds really intimidating, but I am glad you enjoy it! I wish I read more, I think I am the opposite..I tend to rely on technology too much. Good luck in your last semester!

  22. Hi Sabrina!
First and foremost, Izzy is absolutely adorable! She is the cutest! I wish that I had a pet. I am also amazed that you are minoring in Spanish! It is not my strong suit and I find that it is difficult for me to grasp with all of the various stem changes. However, I am glad that I get to know you this semester and I wish you good luck for the rest of the semester!

  23. Hi Sabrina! I have had quite a few friends delete their Netflix accounts, but most of them only did it for a semester so that they could focus on studying. I also love traveling and learning languages, although I took French over Spanish. I think it would be amazing to teach English in a foreign country or to live overseas for awhile. I hope everything goes well for you!

  24. Nice to meet you Sabrina! I think I have had you in quite a few of my classes though I am not sure, and I just clicked on your blog randomly for my comments! I love the pink theme on your blog and the fun font. Your cat is cute too. I am a Spanish pre nutrition major and I am senior too.

  25. Sabrina, it's great to meet you! I can relate to you on the hating technology front; I think I'm an old soul in that regards, too. I hate technology and would much rather read than watch tv or something similar. I think reading so much for school though has caused me to want to read for fun a lot less. That's awesome that you're also minoring in chemistry and spanish-I think that's great. I love chemistry (my major) and I am minoring in German and I think learning a new language is an incredibly cool and tasking experience.

  26. Hey Sabrina, nice to meet you!
Chemical engineering sounds so tough, but that's really cool. It's also really cool that you're minoring in both Spanish and Chemistry. I've always loved Spanish, and I find myself still wishing that I minored in it (before forgetting a lot of Spanish).
How amazing that you went to Spain for study abroad. I bet that was such an amazing experience.
Also, your cat looks so precious!
    Good luck in the future!

  27. Hi Sabrina,

I must start by saying I really love your blog design, the color and fonts are so cool! I definitely wish my blog had this girly esthetic! I am very impressed that you deleted your Netflix account. I watch more Netflix then I probably should, and I have contemplated getting rid of it before, to make myself more productive, but Netflix is how I unwind, and I think I’d go a little crazy without it!

  28. Hi, Sabrina! I'm not sure if you remember me, but I think you were my TA for that engineering orientation class forever ago, and we went to AIChE Regionals together! Anyway, congrats on winning the poster presentation there and good luck on your future research and grad school! I love your cat by the way, he looks adorable! I wish I had the fortitude to delete Netflix but I would miss all my shows too much, which is probably a bad sign.

  29. Hi Sabrina! It’s nice to meet you. I’m not a big fan of technology. I feel like it is a 100 times better to get coffee with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time and chat instead of texting and messaging through social media. To tell you the truth, this is my first year to actually have a Netflix, and I am a junior in college. Haha.

  30. Hey Sabrina! I think I've finally made it to everyone's blog and met them. I think it's great that you want to travel all over the world. It's something that I want to do in the near future as well. I'm so jealous you've been able to continue your passion for reading books. I love to read for fun, but finding the time for it has been a struggle for me. Nice to meet you!
